The film is based during the partition days. Saket Ram (Kamal Hassan) and his buddy Amjad Ali Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) are archeologists working at the excavation sites of Mohenjodaro. Both are against partition and their work comes to a half when the Hindu-Muslim riots begin. Saket returns to his first wife Aparna (Rani Mukherjee) while Amjad Ali goes back to Baluch in Karachi. However, in the ensuring riots, Aparna is killed. Saket in retaliation turns into a bitter critic totally opposing the non-violent Gandhian policy.
